This course is offered in the fourth semester of M.Sc. (Mathematics) program at The ICFAI University Tripura. This serves a course in calculus in which we will learn the classification of integral equations, various methods for solving Boundary value problems and various methods for solving integral equations.

The objectives of the course are as follows:

  • To make familiar with extrema of functional through calculus of variations and integral equations.
  • To understand the problems of the calculus of variations and its many methods.
  • To recognize the difference between the methods of solving integral equations and differential equations.
  • To prepare for the study of modern optimal control theory.

On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to recognize difference between Volterra and Fredholm Integral Equations, First kind and Second kind, homogeneous and inhomogeneous etc. They apply different methods to solve Integral Equations. Students will have much better and deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts of the space of admissible variations and concepts of a weak and a strong relative minimum of an integral.
